Ted’s Hot Dogs – Tempe

Ted’s Hot Dogs began as a shack on the west side of Buffalo, NY almost 90 years ago. Ted’s serves hot dogs, sausages, burgers and chicken cooked over a hardwood charcoal grill.

As I have seen with other restaurants, someone must have transplanted to Arizona because Ted’s skipped right over middle America and came straight to Tempe, AZ for its only location that is not in western New York. I heard about it from my good friend who hails from that area and needed a buddy to go with her to get her hot dog fix after she moved out here.

Ted’s Tempe location still evokes that “shack” feel, with a long counter, limited seating, and a frequent line that reaches out the door and onto the sidewalk.

Luckily, the workers at Ted’s Hot Dogs are pros. So even the longest of lines will move pretty quickly. Make sure to have your order ready when you get to the front of the line, though. If you’re like me – an indecisive introvert who tends to crack under pressure – fear not! The staff at Ted’s is also extremely accommodating so you can order basically everything you can think of “on the side” and then assemble your dog (or burger) as desired when you get to your table. Or, you can force your dining companion to order for you while you snag a table.

My order: a regular hot dog ($2.79), fries ($1.39), and an order of onion rings ($3.39)… with chili, cheese, and onions on the side. This means I can have a chili cheese dog, or chili cheese fries, or both if I feel like having a heart attack later that day. The charcoal grill gives the hot dogs a rich, smoky flavor and the fries and hand-battered onion rings are always fresh and crisp.

Shockingly, I’ve never tried their burger (or non-hot-dog entrees) I suppose I should try that on my next trip just so I can tell you about it.
